Alex-Bell Road Bridge over Holes Creek Rehabilitation

  •

This bridge rehabilitation project involved the replacement of the existing non-composite prestressed concrete box beam superstructure with a new composite box beam superstructure. The three-span bridge (47.5’-48.0’-47.5’) was also widened by 2-feet and converted to semi-integral with new full width reinforced concrete approach slabs. The bridge was closed to traffic during construction and a detour was coordinated with the County and provided in the plans. The bridge rehabilitation was designed to maintain the vertical profile along Alex Bell Road which minimized the length of approach roadway reconstruction. Utility coordination and established existing right-of-way plan were also completed as part of this project.

The successful design included cost-efficient superstructure replacement, proactively communicating with Montgomery County Engineer’s Office, coordinating with the Alex-Bell/Mad River Roundabout project, limiting roadway approach work and avoiding any work being performed within the Holes Creek channel, ensuring that the project had the appropriate environmental clearance and temporary easements. LJB strategically teamed with American Structurepoint on the project since they were completing the design of the adjacent Mad River/Alex-Bell Roundabout project at the same time as LJB was completing the design of the bridge project. This teaming arrangement allowed for seamless coordination between the two projects and provided cost savings to the County.
